Welcome to the family of brands of DownEast Outfitters, Inc.—DownEast Basics, Penny Candy and Modbe Clothing!  DownEast Outfitters, Inc. began in 1991 when, in an effort to find a fun, meaningful summer job, Jonathan Freedman bought a box of denim jackets from a brand name retailer and sold them to his friends during lunch at school.  He continued to buy and sell brand name merchandise, and then his brothers caught on to his success.   Bill and Charlie tried their hand at the business in Provo, Utah where they went to school.  College kids flocked to the local deli on Saturday mornings and stood in line to take advantage of the special sales the Freedman brothers would put on.  Before long, the sales moved to their own store front in Provo, and then to locations in Orem and Salt Lake City.  In 1994, the concept expanded to include home furnishings purchased from name brand furniture and home décor stores, and sold for prices as low as 60% off normal retail.

DownEast Outfitters had been known for producing quirky t-shirt designs since the beginning, but their private label business really took off in 2005 when DownEast Basics was born.  Modest layering t-shirts became the craze in Utah, and DownEast Basics quickly became one of the most popular local brands.  Known for great prices points, exceptional quality, and fun colors, DownEast Basics tees and camis started the line but the collection has grown into a full line of fashion pieces, swimwear, accessories, and denim.  Penny Candy targets the little ones with the same cute fashion and basics for girls, sizes 2-14.  As a complement to the DownEast Basics and Penny Candy lines, Modbe has joined the DownEast family as another option for affordable, fashion forward styles.

DownEast Outfitters, Inc. operates a chain of more than 40 home and clothing stores throughout Utah, Idaho, Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Wyoming and Colorado.  It operates two retail websites:  www.downeastbasics.com and www.modbeclothing.com  The company also wholesales its products at regional markets in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, and New York.   Company headquarters are in Salt Lake City, UT, and the business is still family owned and operated.
